"When I prayed, I saw a child running scared."
My friend, Malaysian businessman Alvin Goh Eng Leh, was praying for an elderly gentleman who had issues with anger and resentment. "A car drove into the driveway, and this child ran and hid underneath the stairs. I described to him the scene and he just collapsed on the ground. I said, 'Was that your father?' He said, 'Yes. He used to come home drunk and beat me. And I would run, scared.'"
When Alvin read my books on fatherlessness — Who's Your Daddy Now?; its updated version, In Search of A Father's Blessing; and The Fatherless Generation — God gave him a revelation of living beyond the orphan spirit and coming to know God as Father.
"When we are literally bringing the Father-heart of God into the entire conversation, His Spirit is with us and there's always revelation," he says.
In his culture, Alvin observes, "We still struggle with absent fathers. Men in particular have ways to manage the situation. Even though this society is a little bit restrictive, they have ways to go about doing things. So we still have scandals, we still have absent fathers who bury themselves in work and have very little time for their families. We still have issues of sexuality as a result of absent fathers or abusive fathers. We have alcoholism, sometimes drugs, anger issues — and it's a very big problem for the church."
By incorporating this message first into men's groups at his church, then recovery groups and even in his dealings in the business world, he has seen lives transformed and entire families healed.
Another time, God revealed that a man Alvin was praying for had been sexually abused his entire life as a boy. "We were able to see into his past and, literally, step by step, help him to come through that and into recovery. Because if he doesn't have that healing, he is not going to be able to connect with his Father in heaven. And if he can't connect with a Father in heaven, there's always going to be a gaping hole in his life. The toxic behavior that emanates out of that is a consequence of that gaping hole."
"The journey," he says, "always starts with the individual recognizing that there is a vacuum that can only be filled by Papa God. He made us in His image. So ultimately, He's our Papa."
Even when working as a consultant with CEOs and politicians, Alvin incorporates the message of fatherhood.
"I have seen very successful Christian CEOs and non-Christian CEOs throwing away everything they have achieved because they came to a point where they just couldn't figure out, 'Why am I so lost? Why is there such a vacuum in me? Why am I such a hypocrite? Deep down, I just am not loved.'
"They come to me confessing to struggles of every kind. So I journey with them."
